How Should I Fix Errors in My Credit Report?

Dispute the information in writing: Write a letter to the credit bureau including your name, account number, the type of error, date and amount and the reasons why you believe that the information is erroneous. Make it sure that you phrase your request as a dispute of an item in your credit report. Send copies (not originals) of all documents to substantiate your claim.

Notify both credit bureau and creditor: Apart from contacting the bureau make sure that you notify the source of information or creditor about the erroneous information in your report. You must also send the copies (not originals) of all documents to substantiate your claim. Many information providers give an address for disputes in the report. After receiving your notice of dispute the provider must include it while reporting the item to any CRA.

Enclose copy of the report with your dispute letter: Keep the original report with yourself and send the credit bureau and the information provider a copy of the report with the disputed items in circle.

Send the letters via certified mail: Using certified mail may cost you a few extra bucks, but in return you will get notification from the deliverer that your letters have been received.

Maintain records: It is advisable to keep records of all the correspondence you have with the credit bureau as well as the information provider. You must take proper notes of all the conversations. Do not forget to include dates of the conversations and with whom you spoke.
